Liberal Party of Alberta in Canada
Liberals: A History of the Liberal and Liberal Democrat Parties The Liberal Party, the party of Gladstone, Asquith and Lloyd George, was a dominant force in Britain, and the world, at the height of the power of the British Empire. It emerged in mid-Victorian Britain from a combination of Whigs and Peelite Tories. Split by Gladstone's Home Rule Bills, it nevertheless returned to power in Edwardian England and held it until after the outbreak the First World War. Riddled by internal divisions and with its traditional ground increasingly occupied by Labour, the party lost ground in Parliament, becoming little more than a token for many years. With the foundation of the Social Democrats in 1981, and their subsequent merger with the Liberals as Liberal Democrats in 1988, a modern version of the party emerged, under Paddy Ashdown and now Charles Kennedy as a significant third force in British politics.
Rene Levesque: Charismatic Leader Had someone told Rene Levesque that one day he would be Premier of Quebec, he would have laughed: how could an inveterate poker player like himself be capable of holding public office? He completed his classical studies, learned English, and enrolled in law school, but his heart wasn't in it. He left to become a U.S. war correspondent. When he returned home, he was hired as a journalist at Radio-Canada. His finest hour came on the TV news show Point de Mire, where he performed brilliantly. Jean Lesage had noticed him and wanted him on his Liberal team. Rene Levesque agreed. Elected, he was named a minister. Sixteen years later, he became Premier under the Parti Quebecois banner - an unforgettable venture that at times began to look like a nightmare.
